In Virto Fertilization (IVF) is a popular infertility treatment that involves combining eggs and sperms in a laboratory. The embryos created are evaluated for quality and then certain selected ones are placed in the woman’s uterus. IVF treatment account over 99 percent assisted reproductive technology and is the most popular high-tech fertility treatment today.

The Process of In Virto Fertilisation

There are several stages of IVF treatment which are mentioned below –

Stimulation of Ovary: Around the beginning of the menstrual cycle, you are given gonadotropin for eight to fourteen days. It is a medicine that is used for multiple ovary stimulations for the purpose of fertilization. You are also given hormonal drugs like cetrorelix or leuprolide that helps the body to retain the eggs.

Development of Follicle: At this stage, you have to make a regular doctor’s appointment to monitor the level of blood hormones and perform an ultrasound to measure the ovaries. Most importantly, this is the stage where the doctors measure the follicle development which are fluid-filled pouches where the maturation of eggs takes place.

Injecting Trigger Shots: After the development of follicles, you are ready for a trigger shot. It is an injection that triggers the full maturation of eggs to the point of fertilization. The eggs will be retrieved after 36 hours of the shot.

Retrieving the eggs: In this process, the doctor gives you a local anesthesia and with an ultrasound, the tube is inserted through the vagina to identify the follicles and ovaries. Then with the help of a thin needle, eggs are removed from the follicles. Typically the number of eggs recovered ranges from eight to fifteen.

Fertilization: Before combining the eggs with the sperms for incubation, an embryologist will examine the health of the eggs. Fertilization generally happens overnight but if the eggs are not normal or the quality of sperm is poor, then they may not be fertilized.

The development process of Embryos: After three days, the fertilized eggs transform into 6 to 10 celled embryos. And around the fifth day, some of the embryos turn into blastocysts along with tissues and a fluid-filled cavity.

Selection of Embryo: Out of the present embryo, the embryologist selects the embryo depending on their quality that will then be placed into the woman’s uterus.

Embryo Planting: The doctor places one to five embryos in the uterus depending on the age and other diagnoses. The embryos are placed using a catheter (a thin tube). There might be a slight cramping of muscles but not painful enough to administer anesthesia.

The Difference Between IVF Pregnancy and Gamete Intrafallopian Transfer

The basic difference between In Virto Fertilisation and Gamete Intrafallopian Transfer are:

In GIFT, a healthy fallopian tube is required; however, IVF can be performed even with a damaged or blocked fallopian tube.
GIFT procedure is carried out with general anesthesia while you only need local anesthesia for IVF procedures.
In IVF the eggs are fertilized in a laboratory while in the GIFT the fertilization takes place in the fallopian tube.
Unlike in IVF, the doctors cannot determine the embryo quality or confirm fertilization with GIFT treatment.
