Bariatric Surgery

Obesity is associated with an array of health diseases and if not treated timely, it can severely impact our health in the long term. However at times, due to a high degree of obesity couple with other health-related issues, merely healthy diet and exercise turn out to be an ineffective solution. This is when people seek weight loss surgery as their eventual solution to lose weight and live a healthier life.

Bariatric Surgery is amongst rare weight loss surgeries that are backed by proven track records. The term encompasses multiple surgeries performed on stomach or intestine to treat obesity. There are many popular bariatric sleeve surgeries performed all over the world and here are some of them:

Gastric Bypass Surgery

Gastric Bypass is one of the most commonly performed Bariatric surgeries. In this, a small stomach pouch is made and attached to the middle of small intestine making a bypass across a small section of the intestine. This way the food travels through the small pouch and reaches directly to the small intestine; at the same time, the acids and enzymes from the old stomach and upper small intestine help in digestion. It changes the amount of food that the body can digest and alters the signals that transit between your brain and digestive system. Gastric Bypass Surgery has proven to remove 62% of the excessive body weight.

Gastric Sleeve Surgery

It is also known as sleeve gastrectomy, in which a section of the stomach is removed restricting the amount of food that can be consumed. Similar to other bariatric procedures, it also stimulates weight loss by bringing a change in hormonal signals between brain and stomach. In gastric sleeve surgery, only a sleeve-shaped pouch of the stomach is retained and rest is removed from the body. That pouch is capable of holding 1 ½ to 5 ounces of food in it. With limited space, patients cannot eat much, therefore intake lesser calories into their bodies. The surgery tends to remove around 66% of the excessive body weight and improves the metabolism and overall health of an individual.

Gastric Band Surgery

Otherwise known as laparoscopy, gastric band surgery involves making a small cut in the belly to put an adjustable silicone band around the upper section of the abdomen. The silicone squeezes the stomach and makes it around an inch-wide channel. Post banding, the stomach is only capable of holding an ounce of food. It is proven to reduce around 35% to 45% of excessing body weight and it can be reversed by removing the silicone band which eventually brings the stomach back to its normal size.

Duodenal Switch Surgery

Duodenal switch surgery is a combination of gastric bypass surgery and gastric sleeve surgery in which around 70% of the stomach is stapled and rest remains normally connected to the duodenum (intestine). Before the intestine reaches the appendix, it is cut and re-attached to the lower region of the intestine. This prevents the formation of bile and digestive juice and the food processing only begins when it reaches further down the intestine. Because of this prolonged period between eating food and digesting, lesser calorie absorption takes place and helps in losing weight.
